Using an eSIM in Peru
Peru's main mobile networks include Claro, Movistar, Entel and Bitel. Lima, Cusco, Arequipa and the larger coastal towns are well covered for maps, ride apps and bookings.
The Andes and the Amazon basin make coverage uneven. High mountain passes, the Sacred Valley's side valleys and the jungle around Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado can have weak or no signal.
Good to know
- Inside the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu area, expect little or no reliable signal; Aguas Calientes and Cusco are better served. Keep tickets and permits saved offline.
- Uber, InDrive and Cabify are common in Lima, and WhatsApp is how many tour operators and hotels confirm pickups.
- Altitude and distance mean long bus legs, so download maps and your bookings before leaving a city.
Peru eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work on the Inca Trail and at Machu Picchu?
- In Cusco and Aguas Calientes, generally. On the trail itself and in many parts of the Sacred Valley signal is limited, so save permits, tickets and offline maps before you set off.
- Is there signal in the Amazon and on Lake Titicaca?
- Towns such as Puno and Puerto Maldonado have service, but lodges deep in the jungle and the lake's islands can be patchy. Ask your lodge what to expect if it is remote.
- Can I use ride apps in Lima with a travel eSIM?
- Apps such as Uber and Cabify run over mobile data, so a data eSIM usually works. Set up your account and payment method before you land, since airport Wi-Fi can be crowded.
