Using an eSIM in Costa Rica
Costa Rica's main mobile networks are Kölbi (ICE), Claro and Liberty. San José, the Central Valley and busy beach towns such as Tamarindo and Jacó are well covered for maps, bookings and messaging.
Much of what visitors come for sits outside the towns. Rainforest lodges, cloud-forest reserves, the Osa Peninsula and mountain roads can have weak signal, so plan downloads before heading in.
Good to know
- Waze is the app many Costa Ricans use for driving directions, and it needs a live connection for traffic and road updates.
- WhatsApp is the usual way shuttle drivers, tour guides and lodges confirm plans, so keep it working on your mobile data.
- Roads to places like Monteverde, Corcovado and parts of the Nicoya Peninsula pass through areas where signal can drop; save offline maps before you go.
Costa Rica eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Monteverde, Arenal and the Osa Peninsula?
- In the main villages such as La Fortuna and Santa Elena, usually yes. Deep in the forest and on remote roads and coasts, signal can drop out, so download maps and confirmations beforehand.
- Do I need a local number for shuttles and tours?
- Most operators confirm by WhatsApp or email, which both run over mobile data, so a data eSIM is normally enough. Save your pickup details offline in case you lose signal at a remote lodge.
- Can I rely on Waze for driving in Costa Rica?
- Many drivers use it for routes and traffic, and it needs mobile data to update. On remote roads where signal fades, keep an offline map as a back-up.
