Using an eSIM in Thailand
Thailand's two largest mobile groups are AIS and True; dtac is now part of True Corporation, so you may still see its name on a plan. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and the big beach towns have solid city coverage, and 4G and 5G are widely available there.
Data gets used constantly: Grab and Bolt for rides, Google Maps and Line for everything else, plus translation when menus and signs aren't in English.
Good to know
- Smaller islands and national parks (parts of Koh Phangan, Koh Lipe, Khao Sok and the northern hills) can have weaker or intermittent signal.
- Line is the dominant messaging app for locals, tour operators and many hotels.
- Tuk-tuk and taxi fares are easier to negotiate when you can check Grab prices first.
Thailand eSIM questions
- Why does my phone show dtac or True instead of AIS?
- Plans connect to whichever local network the package names, and dtac now belongs to True Corporation, so either name can appear. It is normal; check the network in the package details.
- Will my eSIM work on the islands?
- Most popular islands have service in their main areas, but remote beaches and smaller islands can be patchy. Save offline maps and your booking details before a ferry.
- Is an eSIM better than buying a SIM at the airport?
- An eSIM is installed before you fly, so you land with data already working and no queue or passport check at a kiosk. A physical SIM can suit a long stay where you want a local phone number.
