Using an eSIM in Türkiye
Türkiye's three main networks are Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the Aegean and Mediterranean resorts are well covered for maps, ride apps and bookings.
Cappadocia, the eastern highlands and remote stretches of the Turquoise Coast and Black Sea region can be patchy, so pre-downloaded maps are worth having if you are driving between sights.
Good to know
- Istanbul's ferries, metro, tram and taxi apps (BiTaksi and others) all work better with live data.
- Hot-air-balloon and tour pickups in Cappadocia are often coordinated by WhatsApp, which works over data.
- Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for it, otherwise the phone may keep using your home SIM.
Türkiye eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Cappadocia and rural areas?
- In the main towns and tourist hubs, generally, but remote valleys and highland roads can lose signal. Download offline maps beforehand.
- Do I need to register my phone in Türkiye?
- Türkiye registers phones by their IMEI number, not only by SIM, and a foreign phone can generally be used for a limited period (the rule has been 120 days) before registration is required. That is more than a normal holiday, but check the telecom regulator (BTK) if you plan a long stay.
- Can I use rideshare and delivery apps in Türkiye?
- Local taxi and delivery apps, and international ones such as Uber in major cities, run over mobile data. Some require a local number to complete sign-up, so set up accounts before you go.
