Using an eSIM in Vietnam
Vietnam's main mobile networks are Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone, with Vietnamobile as a smaller brand. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang have dense city coverage, and 4G is common in the tourist areas.
Visitors tend to lean on mobile data for Grab and Be rides, Google Maps and translation. Locals use Zalo as the everyday chat app, and many tour operators also reach customers through WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
Good to know
- Mountain areas such as Sapa, the Ha Giang loop and the Hai Van Pass, and some Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba waters, can have weak or patchy signal.
- Zalo is the messaging app most locals and many small businesses use; it works over any data connection but may ask for a phone number to sign up.
- Motorbike taxis are booked in the Grab and Be apps, which show the fare before you set off and need data to do it.
Vietnam eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work on islands like Phu Quoc and Con Dao?
- The main towns and resorts on islands such as Phu Quoc generally have service, but remote beaches, boat trips and smaller islands can be patchy. Check the coverage on the package and save offline maps before a ferry.
- Will I have signal on the Ha Giang loop and around Sapa?
- Towns along the way usually have service, but passes, valleys and remote stretches can drop out on any network. Download offline maps and your accommodation details before setting off.
- Do I need Zalo to get around Vietnam as a visitor?
- Not as a visitor, since Grab, Be, Google Maps and WhatsApp cover most travel needs. Some local businesses and guides prefer Zalo, so it is worth installing if you expect to deal with them directly.
