Using an eSIM in Germany
Germany's main mobile networks are Telekom, Vodafone and O2 Telefónica, and 1&1 now runs a network of its own as well. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt are well covered for maps, tickets and booking apps.
Outside the big cities it is less even. Villages in eastern Germany, the Bavarian Alps, the Black Forest and the Eifel can have weak spots, and visitors often notice dropouts on long train journeys.
Good to know
- Deutsche Bahn's DB Navigator app holds tickets and shows platform changes and delays, so it is worth having data on travel days.
- Signal can break up inside tunnels and on some stretches of intercity rail, so download offline maps and your tickets before you board.
- Many small shops, cafes and market stalls prefer cash or local cards, but ride, parking and public transport apps in the cities all work over mobile data.
Germany eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM keep working on German intercity trains?
- Mostly, but moving trains pass through tunnels, cuttings and rural gaps where any network can drop out. Save your ticket and an offline map first, and don't count on onboard Wi-Fi as a back-up.
- Can I use a Germany eSIM when I cross into Austria, Switzerland or Poland?
- Only if the plan lists those countries. A plan for Germany covers Germany, so look at the coverage on the package details or at a regional Europe plan for border-hopping trips.
- Do I need data to use the city transport apps in Germany?
- Local transport in cities such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg sells tickets and shows live departures in apps like BVG, MVV and HVV. Having data lets you buy a ticket on the platform instead of hunting for a machine.
