Using an eSIM in Belgium
Belgium's main mobile networks include Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet, which also sells under the BASE brand, and the newer entrant DIGI. Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and the towns between them are densely covered, and trains and trams run through all of them.
In the Ardennes, parts of the Hautes Fagnes and a few valleys in Wallonia the signal can weaken, which matters if you are hiking, cycling or driving the smaller roads.
Good to know
- SNCB runs the national train app, and STIB, De Lijn and TEC run city and regional transport apps. All of them work best with a live connection.
- Brussels metro stations have coverage, but signal can dip between stops and in some of the deeper stations.
- Belgium borders the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and France, and near the border your phone may pick up a neighbouring network.
Belgium eSIM questions
- Will my Belgium eSIM work if I take the train to Amsterdam or Paris?
- Only if the plan lists the Netherlands or France. Some phones will connect to a foreign network on the way, so check the package details and your roaming settings.
- Can I use my eSIM in the Ardennes forest and hiking trails?
- In the villages and main roads, mostly. On forest trails and in some valleys the signal can drop, so download an offline map first.
- Do I need data to buy tickets for the Belgian trains?
- You can buy at a station kiosk, but the SNCB app is the quickest way to buy, show a ticket and check platform changes. Having data on the day means you do not rely on station Wi-Fi.
