Using an eSIM in Chile
Chile's main mobile networks include Entel, Movistar, Claro and WOM. Santiago, Valparaiso and the central valleys are well served for maps, ride apps and bookings, and the same goes for most larger towns along the Pan-American highway.
Chile is a very long, narrow country, so what you need from mobile data depends on where you are. The Atacama, the fjords of the far south and Patagonia's national parks have long stretches between towns with weak or no signal.
Good to know
- Download offline maps before driving the Carretera Austral, the Atacama's salt flats or the Torres del Paine area, where signal can drop for long stretches.
- Uber, Cabify and DiDi operate in Santiago, and WhatsApp is the usual way tour operators and hostels confirm pickups.
- Ferries and flights to Easter Island and the far south are separate trips; check the package coverage line if they are on your route.
Chile eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Torres del Paine and the Atacama?
- In the gateway towns such as Puerto Natales and San Pedro de Atacama, usually yes. Inside the parks and on remote roads signal is limited on every network, so save maps and booking details beforehand.
- Does a Chile eSIM cover Easter Island?
- Not necessarily. Rapa Nui is a long flight from the mainland and is covered differently, so look at the coverage listed on the package before you rely on it there.
- Can I use my eSIM when crossing into Argentina by bus?
- Only if the plan lists Argentina. A Chile plan covers Chile, and signal on mountain passes such as the Andes crossings can be patchy anyway, so look at regional South America plans for border trips.
