Using an eSIM in Argentina
Argentina's main mobile networks are Claro, Movistar and Personal. Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Rosario, Mendoza and the major tourist towns are well covered, and the Buenos Aires subway and buses have broad service.
Argentina is enormous, and signal drops once you leave the cities. Patagonia, the Andes, the Ruta 40 and the northwest highlands can go many kilometres without any signal.
Good to know
- Buenos Aires buses and subway use the SUBE card, and Uber, Cabify and DiDi are the common ride apps. Mercado Pago is widely used by locals, and signing up for it usually needs an Argentine ID.
- Download offline maps and your bus or flight details before heading to El Calafate, El Chalten, Ushuaia or the Iguazu Falls.
- WhatsApp is the main way local hotels, guides and restaurants confirm bookings, and it works over mobile data.
Argentina eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Patagonia and on the Ruta 40?
- In towns such as El Calafate, El Chalten and Bariloche, yes. Between them, and on parts of the Ruta 40, there can be long gaps, so download maps first and tell your host your route.
- Does an Argentina eSIM work when I cross to Chile or Uruguay?
- Only if the package lists those countries. Border towns can pick up a neighbouring network, so check your plan and your phone's roaming settings.
- Is there signal at Iguazu Falls?
- The visitor centre and Puerto Iguazu are covered, while some trails and the surrounding Brazilian side may differ. Check the package details if you plan to cross the border.
