Using an eSIM in Switzerland

Switzerland's main mobile networks are Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern and the larger resort towns are covered for maps, tickets and bookings, and signal is common along main rail and motorway routes.

Alpine terrain is the exception to plan around. High valleys, mountain passes, hiking trails above the tree line and some long tunnels can have gaps, even though the country is small and heavily visited.

Good to know

  • The SBB Mobile app holds train, bus and many boat tickets and shows live platform changes, so a connection is useful on travel days.
  • Switzerland is not in the European Union, so a plan for another European country does not automatically cover it. Check that Switzerland is listed on the plan.
  • Mountain railways and cable cars often have good signal at the stations but not on the trails beyond them, so save your route offline before you set out.

Switzerland eSIM questions

Does a Swiss eSIM also cover Liechtenstein?
Liechtenstein is a separate country that Swiss networks reach in some form, but a plan's coverage list decides what is included. Check the package details if you are crossing over.
Will it work on the Glacier Express and other scenic trains?
Signal is generally available in valleys and towns along the line, but tunnels and remote mountain sections can drop out. Keep tickets and reservations saved in your phone beforehand.
Is the eSIM enough for hiking in the Alps?
Many trails near villages and lifts have signal, but high routes and narrow valleys can lose it on every network. Download offline maps and check weather and trail information before you leave the village.
