Using an eSIM in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's main mobile networks include Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch. Colombo, Kandy, Galle and the main beach towns on the south and west coasts are well covered for maps, bookings and ride apps.
The hill country and national parks vary. Parts of the central highlands around Nuwara Eliya and Ella, and areas such as Yala, Wilpattu and Sinharaja, can have weak signal.
Good to know
- Uber and PickMe are common ride apps in Colombo and other cities, and both need a data connection and an account set up in advance.
- Train journeys such as Kandy to Ella are popular, and tickets and seats can be booked in advance; signal can drop in tunnels and cuttings.
- Save your safari and guesthouse confirmations offline, as signal at parks and in the hills can be unreliable.
Sri Lanka eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work on the Kandy to Ella train?
- Coverage is generally available in towns along the route, but it can drop in tunnels, cuttings and remote stretches. Download offline maps and your onward plans before you board.
- Can I use PickMe or Uber in Sri Lanka without a local number?
- Many visitors set up ride apps with their home number and verify over the data connection or by email. Create accounts and add payment methods before you travel.
- Is there signal in Yala and the other safari parks?
- Signal is limited inside the parks and can be good near gates and lodges. Confirm bookings and pickup times before you go in.
