Using an eSIM in India
India's main mobile networks are Jio, Airtel, Vi (Vodafone Idea) and BSNL. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and the main tourist cities are well covered, and signal is common along many main highways and rail routes.
It is a vast country, and signal varies between regions. The Himalayas, parts of Ladakh and Spiti, the north-east, and desert and forest areas away from towns can have long gaps, so plan offline maps for road trips.
Good to know
- Uber, Ola and Rapido are used for rides, and Zomato and Swiggy for food delivery. Some accounts want an Indian number to finish sign-up.
- IRCTC is the main platform for booking trains, and WhatsApp is common for contacting hotels, drivers and guides.
- Local payments run largely on UPI. Most standard UPI apps need an Indian bank account, but eligible international visitors can use UPI One World after passport and visa verification; keep another way to pay.
India eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Ladakh, Spiti and the Himalayas?
- Signal in high mountain regions is limited and can be restricted in places, so do not rely on mobile data there. Download offline maps and share your route with your hotel or guide before heading out.
- Do I need an Indian number to sign up for ride and delivery apps?
- Several apps ask for an Indian number for verification, while others let you sign in with an email or international number. Set up accounts and payment methods before you travel if you can.
- Can I rely on the eSIM on long train journeys between cities?
- Signal is available along many main routes but drops in rural stretches and tunnels. Keep your ticket, PNR number and next-stop directions saved offline.
