Using an eSIM in Romania

Romania's main mobile networks include Orange, Vodafone and Digi. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov, Sibiu and Timisoara are well covered, and most larger towns have service for maps and ride apps.

In the Carpathians, along the Transfagarasan and Transalpina roads, and in the Danube Delta, signal can be limited. Many mountain valleys and village lanes have little or none.

Good to know

  • Bolt and Uber work in Bucharest and other big cities, and Bucharest's metro has coverage in most stations.
  • Train tickets can be bought in the CFR Calatori app or at stations. Journeys through the mountains are slower, so having a connection helps with timetable changes.
  • In the Danube Delta, the main town of Tulcea has service, but boat trips into the channels can be out of range.

Romania eSIM questions

Will my Romania eSIM work on the Transfagarasan highway?
On the approaches and in towns such as Curtea de Arges you should find signal, but high passes and tunnels can lose it. Download offline maps before you drive.
Is there signal in the Danube Delta?
Tulcea and some larger villages have service, but out in the channels and reed beds it drops. Guides on boat trips usually plan the day without relying on phones.
Can I use my Romania eSIM when crossing into Bulgaria or Hungary?
Only if the plan lists those countries. EU roaming rules apply to local residents' SIMs, but a travel eSIM follows its package details.
