Using an eSIM in Portugal
Portugal's main mobile networks are MEO, NOS and Vodafone, with Digi also present as a newer operator. Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Coimbra and the Algarve's resort towns are well covered for maps, tickets and bookings.
The interior and the islands vary more. The Douro valley, parts of the Alentejo, Serra da Estrela and some Azores and Madeira trails can lose signal outside their towns.
Good to know
- Bolt and Uber are used for rides in Lisbon and Porto, and the CP app holds train tickets and shows delays.
- Lisbon's hills and Porto's valleys can cut signal in narrow streets and on some tram routes, so download offline maps before wandering.
- The Azores and Madeira are part of Portugal, but whether a plan covers them depends on the package, so check the coverage line before booking.
Portugal eSIM questions
- Does a Portugal eSIM cover the Azores and Madeira?
- Not necessarily. Portugal's networks serve the islands, but plan coverage is set by each package, so look for Azores and Madeira in the details.
- Will it work in the Douro valley and the Alentejo?
- Towns and main roads are generally covered, but vineyards, river valleys and rural lanes can lose signal. Save offline maps and booking confirmations first.
- Can I use the eSIM for Lisbon trams and Porto transport tickets?
- Train tickets and timetables are available in the CP app, while Lisbon and Porto use separate local transport apps. Ticket functions vary by app, so check the official operator app before relying on it.
