Using an eSIM in Norway
Norway's main mobile networks include Telenor, Telia and Ice. Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and the larger towns are well covered, and many fjord villages have service too.
Outside the towns it depends on the terrain. Steep fjord walls, mountain plateaus, the Lofoten road and a lot of the far north can lose signal, and some long road tunnels interrupt it for a few minutes.
Good to know
- Ferries, trains and buses are booked and checked in apps such as Entur and local operator apps, so data is handy when schedules change, especially in winter.
- Vipps is the payment app locals use, and signing up usually needs a Norwegian number, so plan to pay by card.
- Download offline maps before a hike or a drive through the mountains, since signal can drop on passes and in side valleys.
Norway eSIM questions
- Is a Norway eSIM valid on Svalbard?
- Svalbard is a remote Arctic archipelago with its own local network arrangements. Check whether the package details list it before you rely on it for a trip there.
- Will I have signal on the Hurtigruten coastal ferry and fjord cruises?
- Signal comes and goes along the coast, with good service near towns and gaps in narrow fjords and open sea. Treat connectivity on board as intermittent and keep any bookings saved offline.
- Does my Norway eSIM work when I drive into Sweden or Finland?
- Only if the plan lists those countries. Norway is not part of the EU, so a plan for Norway covers Norway unless its package says more.
