Using an eSIM in Iceland
Iceland's main mobile networks include Síminn, Vodafone Iceland and Nova. Reykjavik and the towns along the Ring Road are well served, and most visitors spend their time on that route.
The challenge is the empty space between towns. The Highlands, the Westfjords, long gravel stretches and many waterfalls and glacier lagoons sit far from any mast, so signal can vanish while you drive.
Good to know
- Download offline maps and your route before leaving a town. Highland roads (the F-roads) and remote fjords can have no signal at all.
- Weather and road conditions can change quickly, and travellers commonly check road and weather pages and the 112 Iceland app when they have a connection.
- Many Reykjavik cafes, bus companies and tour operators confirm bookings by email or app, so it helps to have mobile data from the moment you land at Keflavik.
Iceland eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work on the Ring Road and in the Highlands?
- Along the main Ring Road you should find signal in and near towns, but there are gaps between them. In the Highlands and on many mountain tracks, expect long stretches with no signal on any network.
- Can I rely on my phone for northern lights tours and glacier trips?
- Tour operators usually tell you the meeting point and any cancellations by email, text or app, so data helps before you set off. During the tour itself you will often be out of range, and guides run the day without your phone.
- Does an Iceland eSIM work in the Faroe Islands or Greenland?
- Not by default. They are separate territories with their own networks, so a plan for Iceland only helps there if its package details list them.
