Using an eSIM in Hungary
Hungary's main mobile networks include Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One. Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and the main Lake Balaton resorts have good city and town coverage for maps, transport and bookings.
Quieter areas such as the Hortobágy plains, parts of the Zemplén hills and some small villages away from main roads can be patchy. Plan with offline maps if you are touring by car or bike.
Good to know
- Budapest's public transport has an official app for tickets and live departures, and Bolt and Főtaxi are common taxi options in the city.
- MÁV is the national railway; its app and website show timetables and platform changes, so having data helps on travel days.
- Yettel was formerly Telenor and One was formerly Vodafone Hungary, so you may still see older names on signs and in older guides.
Hungary eSIM questions
- Will my Hungary eSIM work around Lake Balaton?
- In the main resort towns and along the busy shores, generally yes. Quieter stretches and inland villages can be weaker, so save offline maps and bookings if you are cycling the lake.
- Why does my phone show Yettel or One instead of a name I know?
- Hungarian operators have rebranded, with Yettel formerly Telenor and One formerly Vodafone. Either can appear on your phone; the package details name the network.
- Do I need data for Budapest tickets and the Danube boats?
- Public transport tickets and live departures can be handled in apps, and boat and tour operators often send confirmations by email or messaging. Data on the day saves you from relying on café Wi-Fi.
