Using an eSIM in Greece
Greece's main mobile networks include COSMOTE TELEKOM, Vodafone and Nova. Athens, Thessaloniki and the busiest island towns such as Fira, Mykonos Town and Chania are well covered for maps, ferry tickets and bookings.
The country is mostly water and mountains, which shapes signal. Smaller islands, hill villages on Crete and the Peloponnese, and the Pindus and Meteora area away from towns can lose service, and ferry crossings spend long stretches out of range.
Good to know
- Ferry tickets and boarding passes are usually sent by email or held in an operator's app, so have them loaded or saved before you reach the port.
- Taxi and ride apps such as Freenow and Uber are used in Athens and some other cities, and mobile data helps with bookings and pickup details.
- Some remote beaches and walking trails, including parts of the Samaria Gorge route and the Mani peninsula, have little signal, so download offline maps first.
Greece eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM keep working during island-hopping ferries?
- Signal comes and goes at sea, usually strongest near ports and weaker mid-crossing. Save your tickets and the next port's directions offline before you board.
- Can I rely on the eSIM on Cycladic and Ionian islands as well as the mainland?
- Greek networks serve the inhabited islands, but remote coves and the smallest islands can be patchy. Check the coverage line in the package details if a specific island is on your route.
- Do I need data to get around Athens by metro and taxi?
- The Athens metro has mobile coverage in stations, and ride apps and journey planners need a connection above ground. Having data helps when a taxi or airport transfer needs to be arranged at short notice.
