Using an eSIM in Finland
Finland's main mobile networks are Elisa, Telia and DNA. Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and the southern towns have dense coverage, and the networks reach a lot of the lake district too.
Further north the country opens up. Lapland, national parks such as Urho Kekkonen and Oulanka, and parts of the eastern forests and archipelago can have patchy service away from villages.
Good to know
- HSL runs the ticket app for Helsinki's trams, metro, buses and ferries, and it needs a connection to buy a ticket.
- Ferries to Tallinn and Stockholm leave from Helsinki, and your phone may connect to a ship or foreign network at sea. Check what your plan covers before you board.
- In Lapland, aurora and husky tours are often confirmed by message the day before, so data helps even if you will be out of range during the tour.
Finland eSIM questions
- Does a Finland eSIM work on the Aland Islands?
- The Aland Islands are part of Finland but have their own local operator. Check the coverage in the package details if they are on your route.
- Will my eSIM keep working on the ferry to Tallinn or Stockholm?
- Signal on the Baltic ferries depends on distance from shore and whether the ship uses its own network. A Finland plan only covers other countries if the package says so, so check before you rely on it at sea.
- Is there signal in Finnish Lapland when I go to see the northern lights?
- In towns and resorts such as Rovaniemi, Levi and Saariselka you should find service. Out on frozen lakes and in the wilderness it can drop, so tour guides usually plan around that.
