Using an eSIM in Tanzania

Tanzania's main mobile networks include Vodacom, Airtel, Yas (formerly Tigo) and Halotel. Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Dodoma and Zanzibar's main towns are covered for maps, ride apps and bookings.

Beyond the towns, coverage thins out. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and the slopes of Kilimanjaro have weak or no signal in many areas, and remote parts of the western lake regions can be patchy.

Good to know

  • Bolt and Uber operate in Dar es Salaam, and WhatsApp is how many lodges, guides and tour operators confirm plans.
  • Mobile money services such as M-Pesa and Airtel Money are widely used locally, but visitors generally pay by card or cash.
  • Download offline maps and keep bookings saved before a safari or mountain trek, since signal drops once you leave the town.

Tanzania eSIM questions

Will my eSIM work on a Serengeti safari or Kilimanjaro climb?
In Arusha, Moshi and near lodges, usually. In the open park areas and on the mountain signal is limited and can disappear, so save your itinerary and maps beforehand.
Does a Tanzania eSIM cover Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania and its main towns and beach areas are generally served, but check the coverage listed on the package. Quieter parts of the island can be patchy.
Can I use ride apps and mobile money in Dar es Salaam?
Bolt and Uber run over mobile data in the city, so a data eSIM works for booking. Mobile money services need a local SIM and registration, so most visitors rely on card or cash.
