Using an eSIM in South Africa
South Africa's main mobile networks are Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and the Garden Route towns are well covered for maps, ride apps and bookings.
Rural areas vary a great deal. The Karoo, parts of the Drakensberg, remote sections of the Wild Coast and some reserves can have weak signal, so offline maps matter on self-drive trips.
Good to know
- Uber and Bolt are widely used ride apps in major cities, and both need a data connection.
- Power outages, known locally as load shedding, can affect connectivity in some areas, so keep your phone charged and save key bookings offline.
- Kruger National Park and other reserves often have limited signal outside rest camps, so download maps and park information beforehand.
South Africa eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Kruger National Park?
- Around the gates and main rest camps there may be signal, but large parts of the park can have none. Download offline maps and book game drives in advance.
- Does a South Africa eSIM cover Lesotho or eSwatini?
- Not necessarily. Lesotho and eSwatini are separate countries, completely or partly surrounded by South Africa, and coverage is set by each plan. Check the countries listed on the package.
- Is load shedding a problem for staying connected?
- Scheduled power cuts can affect some mobile sites and Wi-Fi in some areas, so connections may be slower or drop at times. Carry a power bank and download maps and bookings ahead.
