Using an eSIM in New Zealand
New Zealand's main mobile networks are One NZ, Spark and 2degrees. Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and the main towns are well covered for maps, bookings and ride apps.
Coverage thins out quickly beyond the towns. Fiordland, Arthur's Pass, the West Coast, parts of the Catlins and many tramping tracks and campsites can have no signal, so road trips need some planning.
Good to know
- Many visitors travel by campervan, so apps for campsite and fuel stops are widely used. Download offline maps before long drives between towns, as gaps can be an hour or more.
- The Milford Road and Milford Sound have limited signal, so save directions, bookings and tour check-in details in advance.
- The Interislander and Bluebridge ferries cross Cook Strait between the North and South Islands; bookings are made online and can be saved offline.
New Zealand eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work at Milford Sound and on the Great Walks?
- Signal is limited at Milford Sound and often absent on multi-day walks and in huts. Download maps and trail information first and treat a connection as a bonus.
- Does a New Zealand eSIM cover the Cook Islands or Pacific territories?
- Not necessarily. The Cook Islands and some other Pacific places have their own networks. Check the countries listed on the package before you travel.
- Do I need mobile data on the Cook Strait ferry?
- Signal can be strong near the terminals and weak in the middle of the strait. Download maps, tickets and your onward plans before boarding.
