Using an eSIM in Kenya
Kenya's main mobile networks are Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and the towns along the main highways are well served for maps, ride apps and bookings.
Safaris are where coverage becomes uneven. Parks and conservancies such as the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo can have weak or no signal away from lodges and park gates.
Good to know
- Uber, Bolt and Little are common ride apps in Nairobi, and M-Pesa is the mobile money service most locals use for payments.
- WhatsApp is how many lodges, drivers and tour operators confirm plans, so keep it working on your mobile data.
- Save maps and confirmations offline before a safari drive; many lodges have Wi-Fi only in common areas.
Kenya eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in the Maasai Mara and Amboseli?
- Near gates, lodges and some camps, usually yes. In the open parts of the reserves signal is patchy, so download maps and bookings before you leave town.
- Do I need M-Pesa to pay for things in Kenya?
- Many locals use M-Pesa. It requires a registered Safaricom SIM, and foreign visitors can register in person with a valid passport. Keep cards or cash as a back-up and check how your accommodation and tours take payment.
- Is there signal on the coast and around Lamu?
- Mombasa and the main beach towns are generally covered. Lamu and quieter stretches of the coast can be patchier, so check the package coverage and save offline details.
