Using an eSIM in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has its own mobile networks, separate from mainland China's. Main networks include CMHK, HKT (csl and 1O1O), SmarTone and 3 Hong Kong, and coverage is dense across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and the MTR.

People here use Octopus for transport and small purchases, MTR Mobile and Citymapper for journeys, and WhatsApp for most chat. Hong Kong is a separate market from mainland China, so apps and services are not set up the same way on either side of the border.

Good to know

  • Hong Kong and mainland China are separate for mobile service. A plan for Hong Kong covers Hong Kong, so check whether a plan lists Shenzhen or mainland China before you cross.
  • Most of the MTR, including tunnels between stations, has mobile coverage, and the Peak, Lantau and the outlying islands are covered in their main areas.
  • Country trails such as the Dragon's Back and Sai Kung can lose signal in the hills, so download maps before a hike.

Hong Kong eSIM questions

Will a Hong Kong eSIM work when I cross into Shenzhen or Macau?
Not unless the plan lists them. Hong Kong, mainland China and Macau are separate mobile markets, so check the coverage on the package before crossing the border.
Is a Hong Kong eSIM the same as a mainland China eSIM?
No. They are different destinations with different networks, and some mainland plans connect through other networks or routes. Look at the specific package details for where a plan works.
Will it work on the MTR and out on the islands like Lantau and Cheung Chau?
The MTR has broad coverage, including most tunnels, and the main areas of Lantau and the larger outlying islands are served. Hiking trails and remote beaches can drop out, so keep offline maps handy.
