Using an eSIM in Canada
Canada's three big national networks are Rogers, Bell and Telus, with regional brands and a fourth network, Freedom Mobile, strongest in the cities. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa are well covered for maps, rides and booking apps.
The country is huge and most of it is empty. Outside the cities and the highways that link them, large areas of the Rockies, the Prairies, northern Ontario, the Yukon and Newfoundland have patchy or no signal.
Good to know
- Parts of the Trans-Canada and mountain highways, including some stretches near Banff, Jasper and Glacier, can lose signal between towns. Download offline maps before long drives.
- Transit apps and cards such as Presto in Toronto, Compass in Vancouver and OPUS in Montreal work alongside journey planners that need a connection.
- Niagara Falls and other border crossings are close to the United States; a Canadian plan does not automatically cover the US.
Canada eSIM questions
- Will my eSIM work in Banff, Jasper and the Rockies?
- The towns of Banff and Jasper are generally covered, but highways through the mountains and backcountry trails can lose signal. Save offline maps and park information before heading out.
- Does a Canada eSIM work when I drive into the United States?
- Only if the plan lists the United States. A Canada plan covers Canada, so check the package coverage or choose a regional North America plan.
- Will I have signal in the Yukon, the Northwest Territories or Newfoundland?
- Towns such as Whitehorse, Yellowknife and St. John's have service, but long highways, parks and remote coasts often do not. Check the package coverage and keep offline maps for the road.
